Heritage House is housed in the historic north boys’ school in Abbeyleix, and was opened in 1997 with a museum dedicated to local history and culture from Abbeyleix and County Laois.
The museum at Heritage House will transport visitors back in time with stories from pre Christian times right up to the 20th century. Learn about the Abbeyleix Carpet Factory, where a number of hand tufted carpets were made for the state room for the Titanic, gain insight to the warring tribes of Laois. Visitors can learn about the Norman influence, the suppression of the monasteries at the hands of Henry viii and progress through plantations, the influence of the landlords and Ireland’s brush with the industrial revolution.
Our craft and gift shop offers an array of lovely local crafters and artists products. It is the perfect place to browse and support local!
We also provide a local research room which contains a vast amount of information on Abbeyleix and the surrounding area. Reasonably priced family research packages are available and can be undertaken by our skilled research staff to suit your requests. We provide a one-stop-shop for all your heritage needs!
Children can enjoy the secure playground with a wide selection of state of the art play facilities for all ages with on site ample car parking available.
Heritage House offers multiple sized conference room spaces which can be adapted and tailored to meet your requirements. Ideally located just off the M7/M8 motorway, we offer; reasonable rates, refreshments, Wifi and audiovisual facilitates for both small and large numbers. Office space at the building is also available with negotiable rates.
