The museum at Heritage House, is located in the former Abbeyleix North National School, built in 1885. It is normally self-guided but we also offer a guided tour.
Our local guides will give you a look at the history of the oldest planned estate town in Irelnd, local carpet weaving as well as old irish household items. You will see our model of the Rock of Dunamaise and Bog Butter display. Our titanic exhibit will take you through the connection that was established with Abbeyleix when the local carpet factory supplied carpets to ship. You will also learn about the de Vesci family and their importance in the area.

You can explore Abbeyleix one of the first planned estate towns in the country, learn about its history and some of the colourful characters who have inhabited it through out the years. The tour, beginning in Heritage House, will bring you take you on a journey starting in Pre Christian Ireland all the way up to modern times. Learn about the Viscounts De Vesci, the town’s links to Crimean Counts, the Titanic, the American Goldrush and a lot more besides. This tour of the architectural heritage of the “town of the fountains” takes about 50 minutes. Prebooking is advisable.

This walk offers a chance to explore Abbeyleix Bog and High Bog Walkway, one of the country’s most beautiful conservation projects.
Killamuck Bog provides a wonderful setting to hear folklore stories from Irish cultural heritage which are deeply rooted in nature. Hear about the wonderful folklore stories of the area while surrounded by some of Laois's beautiful nature.
The tour takes around 40 minutes but we would encourage you to take a couple of hours to further explore the entirety of the Abbeyleix Bog Loop. Prebooking is advisable.
